With a stalwart sense of humor, Beth Malone in this TED talk approaches the difficult topic of coping with a loved ones care with the onset of dementia and her perception change of both life and death from the experience. Malone, a bold public space artist and social entrepreneur, discusses her decade’s long journey with her father’s dementia—an early onset form of the disease called frontotemporal lobe dementia (FTD), which usually begins its onset in a person’s 50s or 60s. Malone begins her journey with us by discussing her initial shock over the completely change of her father’s personality and his sporadic episodes of violence and paranoia through the more recent realization that she and her sister could no longer continue to care for their father in his own home. She then takes us with her as she searches for appropriate placement for her father moving him from facility to facility until she finally finds him a place in specialized memory care community that can appropriately care for her father and his needs. Finally, Malone leads us through her moment of realization that her father has changed and is no longer quite the exact man he had previously been; however, in this moment, she finds a spark of hope through an unexpected interaction with her father in his new, “pretty nice hacienda”.
